Poverty & Power

Read Judges 7:1 - 8

"My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. (2 Corinthians 12:9 / NRSV)

Sometimes we consider what we have available to accomplish something and when it does not look like it is enough we decide not to risk it. Churches do that. Bible Study groups do that. Sometimes we look at what other people have and wish we had their resources and we imagine all we could do with them.

In Judges the Lord looks at what Gideon has for the battle against the Midianites and decides it is too much.

How many times have we felt strong in our own resources only to fall flat on our faces?

The Lord decreases the amount of Gideon's resources to the point that he and the Israelites will not be able to take credit for the victory. In fact, they will not be able to depend on themselves for the victory.

Have you ever felt you had too much for to get the job done?

One of the reasons we can see so little change in our relationships, is that we are so full of our own resources. We believe that we have what we need to build our marriage or to do our parenting.

  1. Think of times when you felt like you were changing and growing the most. Did you feel rich in resources or poor?

  2. What keeps us from relying on the Lord?

  3. What happens when we do not rely on the Lord?

  4. Is it possible to have too much?

  5. Do we have too much? Of what?

  6. How much time do we spend trying to get more resources?

  7. How much time to we spend waiting on the Lord for what he is going to do in our lives?

  8. Would you like to grow as a prayer warrior? What steps are you going to take?
