Ordinary Victory

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:55-58)

Whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. (1 John 5:4)

"No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?" (Matthew 6:24-25)

Victory today is mine! God has given us the victory over the ordinary obstacles, the usual nuisances, the petty annoyances. God has given us victory over the little sins that tear at relationships before they grow into great disturbances that tear apart relationships.

For Reflection & Sharing:

  1. Describe what being steadfast and immovable is like. What are we to be steadfast in? How does that affect all the other stuff we could get ourselves involved in?

  2. How is our faith the victory that conquers the world?

  3. How is faith undermined when we try to serve God and wealth at the same time? How is our victory undermined?

  4. Describe how anxieties over things like food and clothing, the ordinary worries, can affect our relationship with God and with one another.

  5. What are some of these ordinary worries?

  6. When the ordinary stresses and strains come upon us how can we conquer them by faith, rather than be conquered by them?
